There are so many classic “General Hospital” moments that involved Brad Maule’s Dr. Tony Jones. During his over 20 years on the show, his loves, losses, and the hope he inspired brought so much to the Port Charles scene. Let’s take a look back at the good doctor’s life… and death.
Tensions ran high when Frisco’s (Jack Wagner) older brother Tony, a neurosurgeon, moved to Port Charles. The rock star blamed his older brother for problems with their father . It seems Tony had an affair with their stepmother. Things went from bad to worse when Frisco’s girlfriend, Tania, chose Tony. (That issue disappeared when Frisco found the lady of his heart, Felicia (Kristina Wagner). Tony and Tania married and soon had daughter B.J., named after Barbara Jean Spencer (Jacklyn Zeman), who delivered her.
Too Many Tragedies
It wasn’t long after that Tania was killed in a car crash. All alone with B.J., Tony hired Lucy Coe to help. They eventually married and divorced. Later, Tony had an accident that left him blind and paralyzed. Bobbie nursed him back to health as they fell in love, married and adopted a son from the black market — Lucas. Then the unthinkable happened to their happy family — B.J. was in a school bus accident and later died from her injuries.
Out of the Darkness
One bit of hope came from the tragedy as B.J.’s heart saved the life of her cousin, Maxie. This happened the same day Tony learned Bobbie was having an affair. He was soon drawn to Carly Roberts (Sarah Brown), who later turned out to be Bobbie’s daughter! He thought Carly was pregnant with his child and was devastated when right before giving birth, she admitted the child wasn’t his. This was the beginning of his descent into madness.

Entering Crazy Town
Tony believed Carly and Jason (whom she lied and said was the baby’s father) were unfit and sued for custody. When that didn’t work, he kidnapped the baby and Robin (Kimberly McCullough) too when she’d discovered them. Alexis got him off for his crimes, but he lost custody of Lucas. Tony worked hard to get his life back together.

Tony worked his way back to respectability and even gained unlimited visitation with his son. But, in 2006, an encephalitis plague hit Port Charles. Always wanting to help, Tony arrived at General Hospital and overheard that Lucas was gay. He made sure his son knew how proud he was of him and that he was loved. He caught the disease himself, and died surrounded by Lucas, Bobbie, and her brother Luke. B.J. was also there to welcome him to the other side.
