They may have played arch-enemies (more like frenemies now) for years on General Hospital but co-stars Maurice Benard (Sonny) and Réal Andrews (Taggert) get along famously off-screen. So much so that Benard recently spotlighted his pal in the latest episode of his YouTube show, State of Mind.
Maurice Benard Hosts Réal Andrews
While they appear to be opposites to viewers — seeing as one plays a mobster and the other a lawman — the two actors have far more in common than just their profession. Benard took to Instagram Sunday afternoon to promote this very special conversation.
“BIG BOYS DO CRY,” begins the Daytime Emmy winner in the caption accompanying a short preview. “If you’re in the mood to watch 2 men talk about the mistakes they’ve made. And how we can improve as fathers, husbands, and basically human beings.” You can watch the entire 20-minute interview here.
In the Instagram video, Benard starts by saying, “How are you? I want everyone to watch today, Sunday, State of Mind. I think it’s very important. Réal Andrews, who I interviewed, was talking about death and he was very vulnerable, very … there was a certain look in his eyes that when I was doing it, I couldn’t believe it.
“And as we all know that suicides right now are through the roof during this pandemic, and I just want to say that it’s very important for men, women, but especially men, to be vulnerable, let yourself cry. Don’t listen to people who tell you that it’s weak — it’s not weak. It’s strength. Thank you.”
The two stars dig deep during their moving conversation that may cause you to reach for the box of tissues as they address very important topics in a way we all need during these strange and difficult times. It’s a true service Benard is performing with these interviews. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
