General Hospital Is Trying and Succeeding With Something New

General Hospital Anna, Valentin, Carly

For way too long, General Hospital characters have essentially existed on their own islands, with rarely anyone venturing outside their own particular Port Charles bubble. But strange things have been afoot lately and to be honest — we at Soap Hub are enjoying how they’re shaking things up!

General Hospital — Doing The Unexpected

Take the Tuesday air show where we suddenly have Carly (Laura Wright) knocking on Anna’s (Finola Hughes) door to conspire with our favorite super spy. Say what?! Now, Carly is one of the rare characters who get to venture outside of her sphere, sure — considering she runs the Metro Court where anyone in Port Charles can happen by, but having a heart-to-heart with Anna hadn’t happened in a while, if ever.

Sonny (Maurice Benard) is getting to completely change his character’s world because he has no idea who he is — and now he’s going to be sharing a majority of his scenes with Nina (Cynthia Watros). Wowza! Yes, we saw that coming and we were excited to see it happen! Both Benard and Watros are Daytime Emmy-winning powerhouses so we know anything can happen — yay!

Also mixing it up in a new and different way are Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) and Sam (Kelly Monaco) while Jason (Steve Burton) has intriguing moments with Britt (Kelly Thiebaud). So, rather than rehashing the same old scenarios and topics, we get to see all of these characters whom we’ve come to love in a new light as they explore new avenues with unexpected partners. Bonus!

It feels as if the GH writers have thrown all of the show’s exciting and dynamic characters into a box, shook it up, and let it spill out to see what new combos would be produced. It’s letting us see fun and entertaining new relationships and dynamics. Cyrus (Jeff Kober) and Peter (Wes Ramsey) teaming up in the ultimate unholy alliance? There’s no way that will end well as we wonder which baddie will end up eliminating the other!

It’s also been a hoot to see Kathleen Gati’s Obrecht share a “moment” with Anna as two of Port Charles’ most dangerous women came to a meeting of the minds, united in their love for Maxie (Kirsten Storms), and mutual poor decisions they’ve regrettably made in order to possibly work together to bring down Peter! Sign us up for more of that, please!

Add to that throwing Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) into almost everyone’s orbit (Carly, wow — and now Gladys?!), and we couldn’t be happier. Supporting Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn)? Love it. Having a baby with Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton) — OMG! Conspiring with Anna or Martin (Michael E. Knight)? Awesome!

While the show has been somewhat dark lately and made some moves (e.g. killing Franco) that have had us throwing things at the TV, we have to also point out that there are things this venerable show is doing so well – and we look forward to more of that. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
