Is Jude just a code name for Jax?

It’s been less than a month since Wil Traval was announced as General Hospital’s mysterious new character, Jude, and fans still know almost nothing about him. No character details have been revealed beyond his name and the intriguing description of a “stranger.” With Traval’s debut set for this month, the secrecy raises an even bigger question: Is Jude really a new character — or could GH be hiding a Jax recast in plain sight?

Key Takeaways

  • Wil Traval is joining General Hospital as the mysterious “Jude,” but few details about his character have been revealed.
  • Traval’s casting and the recent Jax references raise the possibility that “Jude” could secretly be a Jasper Jax recast.
  • Jax has decades of General Hospital history involving Brenda, Carly, Josslyn and some of Port Charles’ biggest storylines.

Jax Attack

Jax was first introduced in 1996 he was a corporate raider fell hard for Brenda (Vanessa Marcil) and married her in 1996, only for the union to be declared invalid when his first wife, Miranda (Leslie Horan), resurfaced alive. After Brenda was presumed dead in 1998, Jax eventually moved on with Chloe (Tava Smiley) in 1999. But everything changed in August 2000 when Stefan convinced Jax that Brenda might still be alive. Unable to ignore the possibility, Jax ended his relationship with Chloe and left Port Charles determined to find Brenda.

Jax returned to Port Charles the following August with a major surprise — Alexis’s (Nancy Lee Grahn) sister, Kristina (Jaime Ray Newman), by his side. More romantic turmoil followed, including failed marriages to Skye (Robin Christopher) and Carly (Laura Wright) and another engagement to Brenda that never made it to the altar. Jax also welcomed daughter Josslyn (then Karleigh and McKenna Larson) with Carly, but their relationship eventually deteriorated into a bitter custody battle. As tensions reached their breaking point in August 2011, Jax staged his death in a plane crash. He secretly returned to Port Charles soon afterward to check on Josslyn before disappearing once again.

Jax made his way back to Port Charles the following August after learning that Josslyn had been hospitalized. His return quickly became even more complicated when he found himself trying to help bring his fugitive brother, Jerry (Sebastian Roché), to justice. With his marriage to Carly also reaching its end, the former couple filed for divorce before Jax once again said goodbye to Port Charles in September.

Jax returned to Port Charles in April of 2013 with some unexpected news for Carly: A clerical error meant their divorce had never been finalized. Getting the paperwork sorted out was especially important to Jax because he was once again engaged to Brenda. But another trip down the aisle wasn’t meant to be. After realizing Brenda still had feelings for Sonny (Maurice Benard), Jax ended their engagement and left Port Charles behind, heading overseas once again.

In 2016 Jax resurfaced in Port Charles in August and urged Carly to stop searching for the person who donated a kidney to Josslyn (Eden McCoy). But Jax knew more than he was letting on and soon returned to Australia with a secret. He was back in Port Charles by November under heartbreaking circumstances, returning for Morgan’s funeral. After paying his respects, Jax headed home once again to care for his ailing mother, Lady Jane (Barbara Tarbuck).

Lady Jane’s death brought Jax back to Port Charles in April 2017, where he reconnected with a devastated Carly, who mistakenly believed Sonny had slept with Nelle (Chloe Lanier). After sleeping with Carly, Jax dropped an even bigger bombshell: He admitted that he had illegally obtained Nelle’s kidney from Frank Benson for Josslyn. The revelation ultimately led Sonny to have Jax deported to Australia. Two years later, in May 2019, Jax returned to Port Charles once again — this time announcing that he planned to stick around.

After settling back into Port Charles in 2019, Jax grew close to Nina, and the two eventually became a couple. Their romance fell apart in 2021 when Nina learned that Jax and Carly had hidden the truth that Nelle was her daughter. Jax later followed Nina (Cynthia Watros) to Nixon Falls, where she was secretly keeping an amnesiac Sonny’s survival from his family. After eventually discovering the truth and helping bring Sonny home, Jax found himself increasingly disconnected from life in Port Charles. In November 2021, he said goodbye to Carly and Josslyn and returned to Australia to handle business matters.

Behind the scenes, Ingo Rademacher had been let go from GH. Reporting stated that his departure was tied to his refusal to comply with the production’s COVID-19 vaccination requirement; his exit also occurred amid backlash over social-media posts. His previously taped final scenes aired November 22.

‘Wil’ He Be Jax?

Soaps have a long history of announcing actors under mysterious character names, only to reveal that they’re actually playing someone viewers already know. And there are some intriguing similarities between Traval and Rademacher — both actors are tall, Australian, and could easily fit the Jax mold.

More importantly, General Hospital has suddenly put Jax back into the conversation without actually putting him onscreen. Josslyn is now running Jasper Jax Enterprises after Hudson (Troy Lennon Apel) arrived in Port Charles to inform her that her father had named her CEO. Hudson has also been making mysterious phone calls, while the show has repeatedly stressed that Jax is unreachable because he’s sailing around the world.

That could simply explain why Jax isn’t around while Josslyn takes control of his company. But with Traval’s mysterious “Jude” arriving just as Jax has become increasingly important to the storyline, the timing feels worth watching. My prediction? Jax isn’t nearly as unreachable as everyone thinks — and “Jude” may turn out to be the name hiding his return to Port Charles.

Traval has built an impressive television résumé across streaming and network TV. He starred as a series regular on Michael Petroni’s Netflix drama Messiah, alongside Michelle Monaghan, John Ortiz, and Jane Adams, and appeared opposite Krysten Ritter as Will Simpson on Netflix’s Jessica Jones. Traval was also a series regular on ABC’s Red Widow, starring alongside Radha Mitchell, Goran Višnjić, and Clifton Collins Jr. His credits also include a recurring role on Dynasty and memorable arcs on Arrow, Chicago P.D., Grimm, and Once Upon a Time.

What do you think? Is Jude a fake out name by the show to reintroduce Jax?
