There is an intense dislike between Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Sidwell (Carlo Rota), and their rivalry didn’t end when Jenz was sent to Pentonville. Sonny seemed suspicious when he went to the prison to meet with an old mob associate and asked him to pass a message to some inmates.
Sidwell seemed to know that an attack was imminent. He offered to pay Curtis (Donnell Turner) to protect him, but his cellmate declined. He then confronted Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) in the visitor’s room and begged her to do something to save him. She also declined his request.

A Drew Or Sidwell Setup
All roads point to Sonny, but that may be too obvious. Sonny is ruthless, but he is intent on leaving his mob days behind him. Sidwell is already behind bars, so there is not much reason to have him beaten to death. Also, he would have made sure that Curtis was not hurt.
One theory is that Sidwell set the whole thing up to accuse Sonny. Sonny goes to prison, where Sidwell can even the score. This is why he put the idea in both Alexis and Curtis heads beforehand.
Jenz may be a little crazy, but he wouldn’t have had anyone beat him as badly as they did. He could have died, and he would not have let it get that far.
