Billy Hargrove joined Season 2 of Stranger Things as Max’s older stepbrother, but fans quickly learned there’s more to him than meets the eye. Now with Season 3 premiering in a couple of weeks, we’ll get to learn even more about Hawkins’ bad boy.
From his hometown to his history of abuse, here are five fast facts you need to know about Billy (Dacre Montgomery) on Stranger Things.
Max’s Stepbrother
Billy makes it very clear from the beginning that he’s not Max’s biological brother — he’s her stepbrother. It’s revealed that Billy’s father, Neil Hargrove, married Max’s mother, Susan Mayfield.
Moved From The West Coast
Both Billy and Max move to Hawkins, Indiana from California in 1984, which made them new kids back in Season 2. While Max (Sadie Sink) has an easier time transitioning to live in Indiana, Billy is aggressive and doesn’t make any friends.
Beef With Steve
Billy joins the school basketball team and uses it as an excuse to start a beef with Steve Harrington. It’s clear Billy doesn’t like Steve, but Steve has no idea why he’s so disliked.
Abuse Victim
It’s revealed later in Season 2 that Billy is an abuse victim. In fact, he gets physically abused by his father when he does something his father doesn’t like. In one scene in Season 2, Billy’s father hits him because he lost Max.
Hey There, Mrs. Wheeler
Billy begins a flirtation with Mike Wheeler’s mom, Mrs. Wheeler (Cara Buono), in Season 2. Though nothing comes of it, trailers from Season 3 of Stranger Things shows the flirtation continuing.
