When they’re not involving themselves in family, and family-adjacent shenanigans on Days of Our Lives, Tony and Anna DiMera are busy living the high life in various European hotspots. And that’s a life that appeals to world traveler Thaao Penghlis – though he’s seriously considering returning to his childhood home of Australia.
Thaao Penghlis Considers A Move Back Home
The actor took to Instagram on Thursday evening to post a picture of himself…posing alongside a familiar looking face! His accompanying message explained that the snapshot had been taken while he was, “At home in Sydney Australia with family last year. Days was a big hit there. Thinking of eventually moving back to spend more time with my siblings. Family for me was always first.”
Penghlis, the son of Greek emigrants, was born and raised in Surry Hills, Sydney, and had it not been for a chance encounter with a famous Mexican ballet choreographer, the budding thespian might have remained in his hometown.
But Penghlis decided to throw caution to the wind and accept Senora Amalia Hernandez’s proposal that he accompany her back to Mexico City. Though he was understandably nervous, Penghlis also saw the offer as the fulfillment of a prophecy. Months earlier, he had been to a psychic who told him that come August 29th he would be moving to New York to become an actor. The date of the flight to Mexico City? August 29th.

From there, Penghlis booked a one-way ticket to New York. He quickly found accommodations and a source of steady income. Eventually, he entered the world of high fashion, hob knobbed with the likes of Ralph Lauren and Jacqueline Kennedy, and eventually got his foot into the acting door.
Roles in feature films, daytime soap operas, and primetime programs followed, and Penghlis even returned to his native Australia in order to film the series Mission: Impossible.
Penghlis eventually became a traveler and Greece and Egypt quickly became his favorite destinations. His love of adventuring has been perfectly captured in books such as Places: The Journey of My Days, My Lives, and Seducing Celebrities One Meal At A Time. Days of Our Lives airs weekdays on NBC.
