Soaps often need comic relief, and Days of Our Lives (DOOL) was overflowing with an abundance of it in the 1980s via Calliope Jones, the out-there-on-some-other-planet fashion designer with a heart of gold and sardonic mouth.
While Calliope (Arleen Sorkin) found her true love with another comic character – inventor, scientist, and psychic Eugene Bradford (John DeLancie) – she certainly could stand on her own two feet… and when “Eug” was presumed dead (when he really disappeared in his own time machine), Calliope still stood on her own.
There was nobody quite like her and she somehow got involved with every character in town.
After all, she did provide the ladies with wedding gowns and fashion advice, producing classy designs despite her own crass way of dressing. But, seeing what Calliope would show up wearing each day was part of the fun.
