On the May 13 episode of Days of our Lives, Alex feared the worst when his father-in-law, Steve, showed up at Alex’s front door… and wanted to talk about Alex’s newfound daughter. Alex – and we – braced ourselves for a tongue-lashing. But we were both in for a pleasant surprise.
Key Takeaways
- Alex thought Steve would be furious about Joy and Kelsey
- Steve was understanding and welcoming
- It was very un-soapy – and very welcome
And So It Goes

In a typical soap scenario, Steve (Stephen Nichols, who reacted Deidre Hall’s viral moment with Ryan Gosling) would have come charging into Stephanie (Abigail Klein) and Alex’s (Robert Scott Wilson) home, shouting at Alex over how dare he have an affair and a child with Joy (AlexAnn Hopkins, spoke about what the baby means for Alex and Stephanie), and threatening all sorts of violence in defense of Steve’s little sweetness. But Steve chose a different tack. For one thing, he was calm. For another, he was understanding. After all, Steve had a similar experience when Ava (Tamara Braun) popped up and told Steve about Tripp (Lucas Adams). Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) embraced Tripp as one of her own children. And, after he tried to frame her for murder (oops, my bad), Tripp embraced Kayla in return.
Extended Family

Steve told Alex that he knew Alex only got back together with Stephanie after he broke off his relationship with Joy, and that Joy was the one who didn’t tell him about Kelsey. Alex never lied to Stephanie. (Which was a refreshing development, too. In a typical soap story, Alex would have kept Kelsey a secret from Stephanie for no reason other than to give her the chance to find out about the baby in the worst manner possible.) Steve welcomed Kelsey to the family, as across town, Kayla was telling Marlena (Deidre Hall) the same thing.
A New Day is Dawning
We love soaps. We love soap tropes. And we love soap drama. But, every once in a while, it’s nice to get an unexpected surprise in the form of a soap character doing not what we expected, but what needs to be done. Kudos to Steve, Kayla, Alex, and Stephanie. And to Days of our Lives.
