John and Marlena were all set to tie the knot – again – on Days of Our Lives. Then, Kristen (Stacey Haiduk) locked Susan (also Stacey Haiduk) in a freezer, took over her identity, crashed the wedding, and urged a drugged Sami (Alison Sweeney) to shoot John (Drake Hogysten).
Except Sami shot Marlena (Deidre Hall), instead. (Well, kinda. Eric lunged for the gun and it went off, with Sami insisting she didn’t squeeze the trigger.)
Now Sami is being cross-examined by Hope (Kristian Alfonso), Marlena is being tended to by Kayla (Mary Beth Evans), and John is standing by stoically during what should have been their honeymoon – again.
This is not a lucky couple. Marlena was presumed dead for years. John was presumed dead for months. They’ve cheated on each other. They’ve fallen for – and married – other people.

Soapy Stuff
It’s a soap, 26% of the audience feels like they shouldn’t have to explain this to you. Stuff happens. Stuff has to happen. Bad stuff. If bad stuff didn’t happen, there would be no story. And that would truly be the biggest curse of all.
Stay the Course
And then there are the 16% who think John and Marlena tempted fate by planning another splashy wedding. What’s wrong with living in sin? Things were going well, and they went ahead and ruined it.
