Does Salem Need a New Supervillain?

Yes, Days of Our Lives fans, there was life in Salem before Joseph Mascolo joined the cast as Stefano DiMera in 1982 (plus he took some years off here and there), but it is hard to imagine a future without him.

Mascolo’s 2016 death makes it more unlikely than usual that the Pheonix will rise again, so we wanted to know: Does Salem need another supervillain?

Enough is Enough
Stefano was one of a kind. He is irreplaceable. There will never be another one like him, and 66% of fans don’t think the show should bother trying.

Instead, you are satisfied with Andre (Thaao Penghlis) and Deimos (Vincent Irizarry) wreaking havoc in Salem, albeit not on the same grand scale as Stefano. Victor (John Aniston) and Eduardo must feel so sad that they didn’t even make the bad boy cut… Kids these days, no respect for their evil elders….

Out With the Old, In With the New
Maybe the reason Victor and Eduardo (A Martinez) didn’t get mentioned along with Andre and Deimos is because 34% of viewers don’t believe any of the villains currently on the canvas are getting the bad boy job done. They’d like to see some new faces who can really make the denizens of Salem suffer.

Suggestion Box
Only 1% of you voted for the “Other” option, but you did have concrete suggestions, ranging from recasting Stefano, to yet another illegitimate DiMera heir to a twin brother for Stefano (which would only work if Mascolo also had a twin available to take over the role — don’t laugh it works for Deidre Hall).

But the most interesting comment proved to be: I liked the show better before there were villains.

Remember how we said there was a Salem before 1982? That didn’t mean everything was peaceful prior to Stefano’s arrival. Just ask a little vixen named Julie (Susan Seaforth Hayes)….
