Chandler Massey Confirms His Exit From Days of our Lives

The great news is that Days of our Lives has been renewed for another year, taking the show to August of 2021. Actors returned to start taping scenes again recently. The bad news is that some are only coming back for a limited run… like Chandler Massey and Freddie Smith.

Smith (Sonny) confirmed on his YouTube talk show, Freddie & Alyssa, that he and Massey (Will) have not been invited back on contract. They’ll be shooting a handful or more of episodes before their characters will exit the canvas.

Now, Massey is confirming his exit, thanking the many supporters who’ve followed Will and Sonny’s love story over the last decade. “Wish it weren’t coming to an end,” the actor tweeted, “but I will be forever grateful to everyone who went on this journey with us.”

In his YouTube announcement, Smith speculated that it’s possible he and Massey would be invited to return to DAYS. (Who hasn’t come back to Salem at some point for either guest spots or extended runs?) But he didn’t anticipate anything happening for six months.

Massey first joined the show in 2010 as Sami (Alison Sweeney) and Lucas’s (Bryan Dattilo) teen son. The show told a sensitive and well-paced storyline of Will’s coming out. Massey won three consecutive Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Younger Leading Actor starting in 2012.

He left the soap in 2014. Then, Guy Wilson took over the role and actually played the part when Will and Sonny were married. Will was killed off (or, as it turned out, “killed off”) by Ben Weston, the Necktie Killer, in 2015.

In 2017, Massey returned to the show and the role of Will when it was discovered that Will had been brought back to life thanks to Dr. Rolf. Initially, Will didn’t know who he was, but later regained his memories and rediscovered his love for Sonny.

No word on how DAYS will write out Sonny and Will, but, according to Smith, the pair’s final air date is set for September 18, 2020. Stay tuned for updates. Days of our Lives airs weekdays on NBC. Check local listings for air times.
