There was a lot of connecting going on in the Tuesday, May 20 episode of Beyond the Gates. Vernon and Anita reconnected with Tracy, Anita’s former Articulette sister. Ashley and Derek pretty much disconnected from each other over this cohabitation situation. But will they call it quits forever? Kat and Laura connected the dots and figured out the hit-and-run wasn’t the Thomas’s only potential major crime. And Eva and Tomas connected over the shared trauma of their pasts.
Scary Leslie
Can’t blame Laura (Destiny Love) for being scared. She woke up to Leslie (Trisha Mann-Grant) looming over her in her room. And when she picked up that pillow, who didn’t think that she would smother Laura? That she came to her hospital room to finish the deed?
Instead, Leslie used the same double-speak that sounded like she was framing her daughter in one breath and defending her innocence in the other. It’s exhausting trying to figure out what that woman means. Does she love Eva (Ambyr Michelle)? Does she resent the hell out of her? What’s the answer?

Kat and Laura Make a Realization
After Kat (Colby Muhammad) catches Leslie in Laura’s hospital room, the two make an important deduction after she leaves. That someone had to be responsible for Laura’s spike in potassium that caused a cardiac arrest in a twentysomething girl.
Kat keeps focusing on Eva, but she seems to be coming around to Leslie being the culprit. Hopefully, Kat or Jacob (Jibre Hordges) will question Shanice (Ernestine Johnson) sooner rather than later. She can talk about that strange nurse, Lulu Lenhart, who suddenly materialized on Shanice’s floor the night that Laura experienced the cardiac event.

Eva and Tomas Share Their Trauma
Eva seems to like hanging out at Orphey Gene’s, where on Tuesday, she had a great and fascinating conversation with Tomas (Alex Alegria). It’s clear that he doesn’t subscribe to Kat’s way of thinking and is annoyed that Kat would rather go to the police than have dinner with him.
But the two soon start talking about the bad parents in their lives. Obviously, Eva talks about Leslie and how she wishes Leslie were just all bad all the time. That way, she wouldn’t feel bad about wanting to go against her. As it is, she feels she can’t fight against her mom because of her massive guilt complex, especially when her mom shows her love.

Meanwhile, we finally learned something substantive about Tomas. It’s his dad who is the emotional abuser in his life. He can never do anything right in his eyes. Even though Tomas is an attorney at a top DC law firm and he’s making strides in the company. But then there were those times when they worked on cars together and shared a beer. Those were the good times. But when they make that shift, it’s all over for them.
The two started understanding each other on a whole other level. It’s a level that Kat and Tomas haven’t reached yet. They are a bit disconnected and maybe on different paths, but they haven’t realized it yet. It just sucks because Kat and Eva are half-sisters and Kat hates Eva with everything that she has right now. And so, if Eva and Tomas end up together? There will be drama.
