How the DMV and Fairmont Crest Men Stepped Up in the June 20 Beyond the Gates

On Friday’s BTG, reactions and interactions with Martin’s mystery, Smitty’s investigation, Joey’s house of cards, and Ted’s marriage all helped up the drama and the stakes.

 Comments

In the Friday, June 20 episode of Beyond the Gates, Ted fought for his marriage. Doug expressed his distaste for Vanessa and Joey’s deal. Smitty and his dirt-digging self turned to Jacob. Joey played poker with his police pals — Chief Elon Hawthorne and legendary detective Marcel Malone. And Vernon and Martin continued to face facts. Their past is now haunting their present, and something must be done about it asap.

Gamblers and Risk Takers

Vernon and Martin

Kenneth (Jason Vendryes) pushed things with Martin (Brandon Claybon) even more. The whole secret isn’t out yet, but bits and pieces of it are being revealed. And it all has to do with two years ago. Kenneth, if that’s his name, was there. But he doesn’t look the same. And whatever he went through (that Vernon said Kenneth started), it took him out for a couple of years.

But now he’s back. Whatever he went through seems to give him the confidence to be as rude and racist as he wants to be. He called himself an avenging angel, which doesn’t mean good things for Martin, Vernon (Clifton Davis), or any of the Duprees.

Vernon is on a mission to put this situation down like he did two years ago. He seems to have hired someone to follow Kenneth. Unfortunately, the guy lost him. And that had to be Bill (Timon Kyle Durrett) that he called at the end, saying, “He’s back.” Right?

Martin and Vernon clashed a little bit. Martin has his controlling tendencies, so he doesn’t like being out of the loop. Meanwhile, it was interesting how Vernon didn’t give Anita (Tamara Tunie) a heads up on what was going down in the DMV while she’s in Chicago. He doesn’t want to mess with her Articulettes rehearsal. But Anita really should be in on this.

Smitty and Jacob

Smitty (Mike Manning) will not be stopped. He’s a dog with a bone, and he’s coming after Detective Marcel Malone (Darryl W. Handy). He laid out everything for Jacob (Jibre Hordges), who is, as his shady partner puts it, a goody two-shoes. Even though Jacob wants this to be untrue, he knows that Smitty’s deductions and research are solid.

Unfortunately, Jacob realizes the magnitude of this situation. He knows that his dad, whom he worships, is probably involved in this mess. Smitty and Jacob talk about Malone’s half-a-million-dollar deposit from two years ago. They wonder what happened back then.

They have no idea that they’re on track to collide with the big Dupree secret that Martin has kept from his husband for the last two years.

Meanwhile, Joey Armstrong (Jon Lindstrom) played poker with Marcel and Elon (Malachi Malik), and they were also talking about two years ago. So many were involved, and it looks like all three shady individuals are going to try whatever they can to keep a lid on their parts.

Doug and Ted

Doug (Jason Graham) is in over his head. Thanks to the monstrous debt he owes to Joey, Vanessa (Lauren Buglioli), and the casino owner brokered a deal that actually works in their favor. Except for the fact that this money laundering operation is super illegal. Doug can’t stand that he put him and Vanessa in this situation.

And the minute he can extract himself from it, he said he will. And it sounded like he meant from his marriage as well. Vanessa is attracted to Joey’s danger vibe, and Doug isn’t about that.

Meanwhile, Ted (Keith D. Robinson) did everything he could to get Nicole to let him come home. This was the talk that we’ve been waiting for. Nicole (Daphnée Duplaix) wasn’t ready to do this until now. Under the guise of renegotiating their living trust, the two were able to let their thoughts fly.

Ted said he hates himself when he looks in the mirror. When he does, he sees the man who hurt Nicole. Nicole, on the other hand, said that when she looks at him, she sees Leslie (Trisha Mann-Grant). And she can’t be anywhere near that. There was so much hurt between them. But there was also a connection that hasn’t disappeared yet. Ted gambled and lost. By the end of the episode, he was on that hospital elevator all alone.

But at least the two finally talked.
