In the Thursday, March 6, 2025, episode of Beyond the Gates, cracks either formed or continued to form in various relationships. We’ll point out two of them, however. Martin and Smitty had an unpleasant conversation in which Martin’s political aspirations seemed to take priority. Meanwhile, Bill and “Failey” (Dani’s word) have been married for less than two seconds, and he’s already trying to control his new bride.
Controller #1: Congressman Martin Richardson
Martin (Brandon Claybon) confronted Smitty (Mike Manning) about the conversation he overheard between Smitty and his mom. He told his husband that he knew he wanted to go back to work as an investigative reporter. It seemed like Martin knows how good a reporter Smitty is, and that’s why he doesn’t want him to return to work. Does Martin think he’ll end up investigating whatever secret he’s holding back?
Because Martin was super harsh with Smitty, he said he didn’t want him to go back to work. He wanted him to do what he promised—stay home and raise the kids. These kids are teenagers, by the way. Martin and Smitty are practically empty nesters at their young age. Smitty clearly needs a purpose to get him through the day.
Martin didn’t mention his inevitable presidential run, but Smitty undoubtedly knows that’s the big goal here. These two are very disconnected right now. They’ll have to show us why we should root for them.

Controller #2: Attorney Bill Hamilton
This was just a small moment, but newlyweds Bill (Timon Durrett) and Hayley (Marquita Goings) basked in their new marriage when Bill mentioned how he thought Hayley should quit her job. Instead, he thought she should concentrate on the social aspect of being beyond the gates. He even gifted her with a black card perfect for endless purchases.
Right then and there, all we could think was that he was already trying to recreate what he had done with Dani (Karla Mosley). We know that he made his ex-wife turn her back on her modeling career in favor of building his career and raising his kids. And now he wants Hayley to forget about being a paralegal. Bill has this incessant need to control, and it’s not going anywhere soon.

Hayley had a better conversation with Dani, who claimed she wanted to move on from obsessing over Bill and Hayley and what they did to her. The anger still simmered, but Dani got a lot off her chest and ultimately told her replacement that they needed to keep away from each other. That’s all she could promise Hayley. But that was probably the healthiest thing Dani has said since we met the character.
What did you think of Bill and Hayley? How about Martin and Smitty? Will these two couples stay strong? Or will they have tough roads ahead of them? Let us know in the comments.
