A lot seems to happen off-screen lately on The Young and the Restless. From entire conversations over texts to big moments (Sharon’s cancer clearance, Tara’s court case, Sutton’s downfall) playing out in the wings, fans miss a lot of stories and only hear about it in passing. The worst, however, came today when the much-anticipated wedding between Summer Newman and Kyle Abbott was played out without cameras around.
Why have Kyle (Michael Mealor) and Summer (Hunter King) marry at all if it’s not going to happen onscreen? And, more so, why bring the characters back next week for Victoria Newman’s (Amelia Heinle) lavish wedding? Would it kill the budget to add a 10-minute scene showing SKyle taking their vows?
The worst part is how much hype the show gave to this story. We saw several players going on and on about flying over for the wedding. Why write so much content about Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford), Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow), and Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) looking forward to and getting ready for the cozy event if you’re not going to follow through?
The disappointment is very real, very deep, and we hope the showrunners see the error of their ways. Summer, Kyle, and their fans deserved the closure, especially after the way this played out. It feels disrespectful to the actors, the character, and the viewers. How absolutely dare they take this moment away?!
Let’s be real here, though. Expecting a nice little wedding from a show using a blanket for a baby may be our fault. We got our own hopes up knowing full well Y&R seems to enjoy glossing over life-changing events that fans will cherish. Do you agree or do you have your own thoughts on this storyline?
