Soap Hub Travel Tuesday: B&B’s Sean Kanan – That’s Amore

Deacon Sharpe’s lived in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Genoa City courtesy of his stints on The Bold and the Beautiful and sister soap, The Young and the Restless. Conversely, his portrayer, actor Sean Kanan, is a Renaissance man, who’s traveled the world — and he plans on seeing more of it.

Sean Kanan – Diverse Travel Plans

Sean Kanan is an actor, Daytime Emmy-winning producer, author, and motivational speaker. His series Studio City, in which he plays Sam Stevens, who stars as Dr. Pierce Hartley in the fictional soap Hearts on Fire. Studio City, now in its second season, can be seen on Amazon Prime. Recently, Soap Hub chatted with Kanan about his many travels and what countries he’d like to visit.

Soap Hub: What’s a dream travel destination?
Sean Kanan:
I would like to visit China now that I’ve been studying Mandarin for a few years. It’s something I’ve diligently worked on…I’ve made significant progress. I have a long, long way to go but I feel I could get around China now if I had to.

Soap Hub: Why did you learn it — for business reasons?
Sean Kanan:
I’ve always been interested in other cultures. I think learning a language is great mental gymnastics for your memory. As an actor, having a powerful memory is critical. I like doing things that make me think outside of the box. It’s so challenging that during my 45-minute lesson, I have to block everything out. I can’t multitask while I’m studying Mandarin. It’s almost meditative for me in a way. I enjoy it. I’d also like to go on a photo safari [in Africa]. And I want to go to Israel, too.

Soap Hub: When you travel, do you stick to a pre-planned itinerary or do you go with the flow?
Sean Kanan:
I love to wing it. Michele [my wife] and I have been to Italy so many times. We’ll rent a car and drive from Milan down past Naples. We’ve never had problems [not having a specific itinerary]. We just go and meet people along the way.

What do you think? Post a comment!

Soap Hub: Do you overpack? Are you good with bringing just what you need? Do you save space in your luggage for souvenirs?
Sean Kanan:
I don’t shop a lot when I go on trips. I used to try to buy a piece of artwork but I really don’t need any more now. I used to overpack and would bring stuff with me that I’d never use. Now, if I bring it — I need it.

Soap Hub: You speak Italian. How does that benefit you when you travel to Italy?
Sean Kanan:
I learned Italian when I realized how popular B&B is over there. I did Ballando con le Stelle [Dancing With the Stars] in Italy. I also shot a film there [2006’s Sons of Italy], and I’ve done talk shows where I’ve been able to speak in Italian. Michele and I were actually married in a little town outside of Naples. We were given the key to the city, and I spoke with the mayor [at a ceremony] in Italian.

Soap Hub: Why did you get married in Italy?
Sean Kanan:
I love Italy. Michele is Italian on both sides of her family. One of my dearest friends owns a hotel overlooking the Mediterranean. I thought it would be the most spectacular location for a wedding and, indeed, it was.
