It’s been nearly half a year since soap vet Jason Thompson made swap from “General Hospital” to “The Young and the Restless.” Now, he offers some fascinating insight into what it’s like to hop from one role to another with barely a break.
“After being on ‘General Hospital’ for ten years, it was really nice to make a change. I couldn’t imagine it going any better, speaking for myself,” Thompson told the website StarryMag.
Thompson loves playing the flawed, but loving and lovable Billy Abbott. Each actor who has brought Billy to life has put his own stamp on the character, but Thompson still tries to do what the writers ask.
“There is an edginess to him and a recklessness to him,” Thompson told StarryMag. “But there is also a charm to him and an inability to not really necessarily stay mad at the guy.”
Before he left GH, another Billy Abbott, the wildly popular Billy Miller (Jason, “General Hospital”), wished him luck. The two longtime soap stars understood daytime actors often move from soap to soap.
When Billy woke from a coma earlier this year, he had Thompson’s face. He also had a new love interest–sister-in-law Phyllis. When asked about working with Gina Tognoni Thompson could only rave.
“She is a firecracker in such a great way. She’s smart and wants to have fun and go for it. I don’t think there are better attributes than that.”
Thompson underscored that he was honored to come to Y&R, a show full of longtime veterans. It also has the distinction of being the number one rated soap for decades.

As with so many beloved soap actors, Thompson is keenly aware of the unique relationship soap fans have with actors.
“The daytime fans, there are no fans like them… I’m just grateful that they have allowed me to prove myself, and I continue to prove myself worthy of their viewership.”
