We get chills from “General Hospital’s” Nancy Lee Grahn’s nuanced, finely realized portrayal of a horrified but still loyal wife. Her work over the last two weeks earns our pick for Sensational General Hospital Scenes!
Recently, Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) had a very understandable fit about Julian (William DeVry) reentering life as a mob boss. After that, she seemed to make a decision to stay with her husband, and the inner turmoil that has caused her has been written all over her performance lately.
Last week as Julian approached her at home, she was all business. She donned her glasses and fiddled with legal paperwork in the living room. She didn’t make eye contact with Julian and mumbled responses as he asked her routine questions. When her distant affect worried him, he said, “Are we OK?” Grahn didn’t miss a beat when she looked up, locked eyes with him, and said with sad resolution, “I’m still here, aren’t I?”
Later, as Molly (Haley Pullos) spoke with her mom about Julian rushing out of the house after a call from Brad, Grahn played skittish and jumpy to a tee. She fidgeted and sputtered nervously, “He’ll call me if he needs me.”

Eventually, she did get to the hospital and found Julian clutching a comatose Lucas’ (Ryan Carnes) hand and weeping, begging him to wake up. Grahn then delivered an understated and brilliant performance. She simply showed up behind Julian, her eyes wide, and slipped a firm hand on his shoulder. With that one gesture, Grahn summed up Alexis’ complicated feelings about her husband.
Bravo to Nancy Lee Grahn for reminding us why she’s earned more than one Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
