A Critic’s Review Of General Hospital: Big Hits & A Couple Of Misses

When it comes to General Hospital, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of the GH week that was.

General Hospital: The Critic’s POV

I didn’t sit down expecting much from the interim writers, but I’ve been pretty vocal in this space about being mightily impressed with the majority of the effort they’ve exerted. I’ve praised the pacing, the abundance of interaction between characters who were formerly islands unto themselves, and a random screen partner here and there. I’ve also issued kudos for recent revelations that actually smacked of good sense and kept with a character’s throughline — of course, Tracy’s (Jane Elliot) ultimate goal is to get her hands on Lucy’s (Lynn Herring) 1% stake in ELQ!

And I’m not even mad at the direction that Anna’s (Finola Hughes) and Sonny’s (Maurice Benard) storylines seem to be going in, even though it seems more than clear that it’s rewrites atop rewrites. Charlotte (Scarlett Fernandez) returning to her Bad Seed ways? Works for me. Sonny being the lone gunman’s target? Why the heck not?

But what I cannot abide, what I cannot and will not ever forgive is the explanation for Blair (Kassie DePaiva) and Martin’s (Michael E. Knight) divorce. DAVID VICKERS?! DAVID FREAKIN’ VICKERS?! Nuh-uh. No way, no how. Big, big miss. That is tantamount to Chris and Dan/Dan and Chris blithely breaking up Ryan’s Hope stalwarts Delia and Roger.

Clearly, the scripters were not big fans of One Life to Live and merely pulled a name they’d hoped viewers would recognize. A classic case of attempted fan service gone horribly wrong.

Further GH Musings

* At this point, who else but Chase (Josh Swickard) is going to learn of Gregory’s (Gregory Harrison) ALS?

* I very much appreciated seeing/hearing Sasha (Sofia Mattsson) pointing out to Cody (Josh Kelly) that she was the hard-headed one who refused to take his warnings about Gladys (Bonnie Burroughs) seriously. Poor guy is really beating himself up just a tad too much, and martyrdom isn’t really becoming of the character.

* The Jason Morgan-lite storyline with Ned (Wally Kurth) still continues to irk more than it does entertain.
