A Critic’s Review of General Hospital: Hypocrisy And Other Musings

When it comes to General Hospital, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of the GH week that was.

General Hospital: A Critic’s Week In Review

Last week, we declared that we didn’t felt sorry for either Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) or Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros), and now we’re here to declare that we don’t feel sorry for Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) either…especially in light of all her hypocritical howling and carrying on in those scenes opposite Nina and Jasper “Jax” Jacks (Ingo Rademacher) – though we readily admit that Wright was on FIRE all throughout.

When it comes right down to it, Carly isn’t really mad that Nina kept Sonny from her or his children; and she’s not really mad that Jax didn’t do his utmost to convince her that Sonny was alive and well and tending bar in a Pennsylvania backwater.

What Carly is really mad about, is that Sonny is back in Port Charles in the first place. She knows that had he never darkened her door again, she’d have lived a happy life with Jason Morgan (Steve Burton); and now that he’s here and in her face, all she can think about are those might-have-beens.

Rather than pile on Nina, or rail at Jax for breathing, this General Hospital hellion should be acting like an adult and properly examining her feelings. She doesn’t have to stay with Sonny; she can always get a divorce; Lord knows Diane Miller (Carolyn Hennesy) would happily oblige her.

And by the by, who would even want Sonny? His actions at Wyndemere – or lack of action, if we’re being accurate – proved exactly what kind of man he is…which isn’t any kind of man at all.

It happens very rarely, like EXTREMELY so, but Nikolas Cassadine (Marcus Coloma) was right; Sonny owed him an apology; he took the word of a strange child, and immediately resorted to unwarranted violence before getting all the facts. We’d say it’s a bad look, but Sonny wouldn’t care.

* Line of the Week:

Nina to Carly: “I will gladly apologize to Sonny, and his children, and his family, and all of his friends…and his seventh-grade math teacher while I’m at it; but I’ll be damned if I ever apologize to you!”

* You Win Some: Trina Robinson’s (Sydney Mikayla) determination to keep Ava and Nikolas together and expose Spencer Cassadine (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) and Esme Prince (Avery Kristen Pohl) paid off…You Lose Some: And it resulted in Nikolas severing all ties with Spencer.

* Why would Esme seek Sonny out at General Hospital, rather than, say, his house? Speaking of Esme, please tell us that there will be consequences for this smarmy fire starter.

* If Olivia Falconeri Quartermaine (Lisa LoCicero) won’t listen to sense – re: Leo’s probable Autism – because it was suggested by Austin Gatlin-Holt (Roger Howarth), perhaps Ned Quartermaine (Wally Kurth) should gently prod her into asking Monica Quartermaine (Leslie Charleson) her opinion on the matter.

* We’ll grant Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) the fact that neither Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) nor Hamilton Finn (Michael Easton) really, “got her,” but Duke Lavery and Luke Spencer certainly did.

* Is the Grecian mandilion player with the Cassadine crest tattoo merely an underling of Victor Cassadine’s (Charles O’Shaughnessy), or yet another heretofore unknown relation of the family.
