Creating couples that enthrall viewers is the key to success in daytime. It’s a tough enough task pairing up cute 20-somethings and becomes even more of a challenge with the 50-plus sect. Yet, age be damned, Paulina Price and Abe Carver are thriving on Days of our Lives.
What makes the duo work and work so well? It’s the perfect blend of Jackée Harry’s fun fieriness as Paulina and James Reynolds’s calm cool as Abe. They’re the duo you could never imagine together.
She’s too wild and outrageous. He’s too stuffy and staid. Yet, put them in the same scene and suddenly magic happens. And, as a viewer, all you can do is smile and go along for the ride.
The best part about the pairing is that it has put Reynolds back on the front burner. He’s a powerful actor, one of Days of our Lives’ best, and when he’s given something meaty, he always delivers. Think back to his fine performance when Abe’s son Theo Carver was shot by JJ Deveraux (Casey Moss) and laid in a coma hovering between life and death.
This time, Reynolds is getting the chance to play something totally different – a lighthearted, later-in-life romance – and he’s embraced it with joy and gusto. He’s all in on portraying Abe’s happiness and enthusiasm over finding love again.
What keeps Paulina and Abe interesting and engaging is the onscreen rapport between Harry and Reynolds. It’s fun and flirty with just the right dose of naughtiness. You never know what’s going to happen in their scenes together, which makes them so enjoyable to watch.
A large part of the credit for Paulina and Abe’s success goes to the DAYS writers. They’ve scripted a young vibrant love story for the twosome that’s truly ageless. It’s a prototype all soaps should consider following for their mature couples because it definitely works.
