After spending a few weeks on the back burner, Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Carly (Laura Wright) are back front and center on General Hospital. But, instead of the usual mobster shenanigans, the couple is dealing with a major medical and emotional crisis.

The child that Carly is carrying will be born with spina bifida. This is certainly a shocking development but it also packed with some juicy potential, especially when Sonny and Carly would have the only child currently on daytime with special needs. (Years ago, Guiding Light’s Holly gave birth to a baby with Down’s Syndrome.) But what do you, the audience want to see?  Here’s what over 6,000 fans had to say:

Thumbs Down
With 51% of the votes, the nays have it. Many fans think the storyline will be too depressing, especially following so close on the heels of Oscar’s untimely death. Soap opera storylines where babies are in peril have never been popular. For many fans that pain is just all too real.

Other fans simply feel that with their previous track record as parents, Sonny and Carly don’t deserve another baby. Or, perhaps more honestly, they don’t want the baby to suffer at the hands of such inept parents.

What do you think? Post a comment!

Thumbs Up
The vote was won by a slim majority however, as 48% of you say you would enjoy seeing such a storyline. Many voters feel that having a special needs baby will make Sonny and Carly reevaluate their lives and correct the mistakes they made when raising Michael and Morgan.

One thing that all voters agreed on is that Sonny and Carly would love their baby no matter what condition he or she was born with. No matter what choice Carly makes there is one thing that is for certain. The viewing audience will be glued to their TV screens to find out the answer. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC.  Check your local listings for airtimes.
